1. Once you have finished downloading a deb package, click on the Files icon on your desktop and navigate to the Downloads folder. By default, this is where the system stores downloaded files.
GDebi is a simple tool for installing local deb packages. Apart from installing the specified file, it also identifies all the required dependencies and automatically downloads and installs them using apt.

Some software packages are not in the repository but are instead archived as .deb (Debian) files. You can download a .deb package and then install it using gDebi. You can get gDebi from the AppCenter. Once installed, you can load the application from the Main Menu
p margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120%; a:link We've written a guide about Synaptic previously. Now we need to write about GDebi. GDebi is a package manager to install a single .deb package in Ubuntu. GDebi will help you resolve dependencies automatically by right-clicking on the package file. We will give two different examples to use GDebi here. Install GDebi To use GDebi in Ubuntu, you must install it first. Use Ubuntu Software Center to do it.First ExampleThis first example is suitable for a single package from packages.ubuntu.com. Most case is when you download a single package only without its dependency packages. To complete dependencies, you use GDebi to automatically resolve and download all dependencies.1. Obtain A Package from packages.ubuntu.com We are using Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr so we give example how to download package for trusty. If you are using 15.04 Vivid Vervet, change trusty with vivid and vice versa. We will download inkscape package (a vector drawing application).Open
In the Search package directories section, select Distribution: trusty, then search inkscape. Don't make any changes except those.
On the Package hits section, you will notice trusty link with Inkscape description. Click that link.
On the Package: inkscape page, you will notice so many packages listed down. They are dependencies for inkscape package. See the Download table on the most bottom of page. There are amd64 and i386 choices. If you are using 32 bit then select i386 otherwise select amd64.
On the Download page, there are many links for inkscape package. So select one link. We choose North America mirror.
You've been downloaded inkscape package. In our example, the file name is inkscape_0.48.4-3ubuntu2_i386.deb. Usually Firefox saves the file on Downloads folder except you select the destination.
2. Install The Package& Its DependenciesTo demonstrate how to install a package (from Ubuntu official repository) with GDebi, we will install a single inkscape package. You must enable your internet connection to do this. Or, you have a complete copy of Ubuntu 14.04 repository (or repository of your version of Ubuntu) in DVD or local HDD. Open Nautilus file manager to the downloaded package.
Right-click package > Open With > GDebi Package Installer.
GDebi window will appear. You will probably see warning Same version is available in software channel. It means the inkscape package you invoke is installable from repository, don't need to use GDebi. Ignore it.
You will see dependencies number in GDebi for inkscape package. In our 14.04, the dependencies needed is three (Requires the installation of 3 packages).
Press Install Package button.
Let GDebi download and install all dependencies including inkscape package.
Installation finished. Go check for Inkscape in Ubuntu menu.
Second ExampleThis second example is suitable for a single package which is not available in Ubuntu official repository. GDebi is far better to install this kind of package, compared to Synaptic and USC. We take Google Chrome package as example. 1. Obtain ThePackage Go to
Download the .deb package.
In our example, the file name is google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb.
2. Install The Package& Its Dependencies Open Nautilus file manager to the package downloaded.
Right-click package file > Open With > GDebi Package Installer.
GDebi will appear. Press Install Package button.
Let GDebi download all dependencies and install them all.
Go check for Google Chrome on Ubuntu menu.

In this tutorial we will learn how to install local software packages (.DEB) in Debian and its derivatives such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint using three different command line tools and they are dpkg, apt and gdebi.
Dpkg is a package manager for Debian and its derivatives such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint. It is used to install, build, remove and manage .deb packages. but unlike other Linux package management systems, it cannot automatically download and install packages with their dependencies.

LinuxInstall deb file from command line (dpkg, apt, gdebi, software center)
To handle this we have gdebi, which is a lightweight GUI application. Its sole purpose is to install deb packages. It detects the dependencies and tries to install them along the package. Lets see how it works
This procedure uses a command line and the native package manager for Ubuntu, Debian, or Mint. You can also install the package by double-clicking the downloaded .deb package in a file browser. This action typically starts a package manager that downloads any missing required software. If no package manager is available, Citrix recommends you to use the gdebi, a command-line tool.
gdebi lets you install local deb packages resolving and installingits dependencies. apt does the same, but only for remote (http, ftp)located packages. The package is also scanned via lintian before the install and itspossible to inspect the control and data members of the packages. This package contains the graphical user interface. When we click on a .deb file firefox asks 'What should Firefox do with this file?, with `open with` and `save` being two options. I tried the following one by one. a) Chose open with. Install with gdebi was OK. b) Chose save. But opened downloaded file from within firefox (from download icon on navigation bar). OK. c) Chose save but then opened downloaded file from Caja. OK.
Now, using the "Synaptic Package Manager", reload the package lists from the repositories by clicking on the "Reload" button, and then click on the Mathematics (Math) section. You should see "macaulay2" on the list, available for download: click on it. It will add both "macaulay2" and "macaulay2-common" to the list of packages to be installed. (Behind the scenes, the package manager will consult our Raspbian repository.)
Later upgrades to Macaulay 2 will become available to you almost automatically. You can periodically run the Synaptic Package Manager and check for updates by clicking on "Reload" and then on "Mark all Upgrades". Alternatively, when an orange starburst icon is occasionally displayed in your task bar indicating that updates are available from Raspbian headquarters, you may click on the icon to activate the Update Manager, and then click on "Check" to download any new package information from the software channels, including the Macaulay 2 repository. If an update of Macaulay 2 is available, it will be displayed at the bottom of the list, after the Important Security Updates and the Recommended Updates, among the Other Updates. Press "Install Updates" to have it installed, along with the others. (If you have not installed the Macaulay2 public key file as described above, then our update will be listed as "Not authenticated", and the "list of changes" will not be available.) 2ff7e9595c
